August 21, 2020 – TROPICAL STORM MESSAGE

Dear Students & Families,

The University of Florida is actively monitoring the track of tropical storm Laura in the Atlantic. UF’s Department of Emergency Management is participating on daily calls with local and state forecasters and emergency managers to learn the latest track and impacts. We will update the UF community on efforts, expected impacts or schedule changes as information is available at UF’s homepage www.ufl.edu.

Though much remains unknown about the storm’s path, we encourage you to take precautions as necessary to stay safe.

With many students scheduled to move to Gainesville ahead of the start of fall semester, we ask you to keep a keen eye on the weather as you make your plans. If you are scheduled to move in to on-campus housing, please know you can reschedule your move-in appointment at https://www.housing.ufl.edu/residence-halls/move-in/. Our staff are here to work with you as your travel plans may change.

We are entering the height of hurricane season. Now is the time to start preparing, as due to the global pandemic, items for which you would typically stock up may be more difficult to find. Please take the time to start planning and purchasing supplies as soon as you reasonably can.

I want to underscore UF’s key method of communicating with UF faculty, staff and students in emergency situations is the UF Alert system. Please take a moment to review, update and customize your location, emergency contact settings and related information in the myUFL system to ensure you receive emergency notifications from the university as we strive to keep you connected and aware of conditions that arise.

We strive to make information available and accessible as possible; to that end, family members can also elect to receive UF Alerts for the Gainesville campus by downloading the GatorSafe app to their mobile device. You can also monitor the @UF Public Safety Twitter feed, as well as the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network, which offers a free Florida Storms app to share information regarding potential weather and hazards.

As always, if you need anything, please don’t hesitate to contact my team and me at umatter@ufl.edu. We will assist students on a case-by-case basis.

Our UF community cares for one another. My thoughts are with all our Gators who may be impacted by the storm.

Be safe, be well, and as always – Go Gators!

Vice President for Student Affairs
